How Fuel Type Factors Into Buying a New Bus

If you are in the market to buy a new bus, then fuel type may be one of your considerations. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about how fuel type influences buying decisions for commercial buses and commercial bus fleets.

Bus Availability

The first consideration is your timeline. How soon do you need this bus or these buses? Not all manufacturers make equal numbers of buses for all fuel types. So, it may be easier for you to find quickly buses using the most common fuel types, gasoline or diesel. However, there are also buses that run on electricity, propane, natural gas, ethanol, bio-fuels, and hydrogen fuel cells.

Also, new buses can be order for almost any fuel type, but used ones may harder to find if you want something exotic.

Fuel Prices

Current and future fuel prices may be driving your decision, so to speak. We may know what today’s prices are, but predicting tomorrow’s or next year’s prices is not an exact science.

Fuel Access

Where will your bus or buses be operating? How is the access to the fuel type that you want to use? This should figure into your decision.

Parts and Parts Availability

Just like with car parts, bus parts are more readily available for the more common fuel types than the more unusual ones. However, this is something you would want to discuss with your bus dealer and/or whoever will be performing regular maintenance.

Existing Fleet

What about your existing fleet? Do you already have several buses with one fuel type, then you may or may not want to stay with that. You have to look ahead with your business plan and consider where your company wants to be positioned in five or ten or 20 years. If you want to be the least polluting fleet out there, then your decision today may affect your reputation tomorrow.
