What Are Some Canadian Government Greening Solutions That Affect Buses?

There are several greening or environmental initiatives both provincially in British Columbia, and federally that affect buses used in the public sector. The purpose of these initiatives is twofold: to encourage more individuals to use public transportation, and to make public transportation less polluting.

If less people drive and more people take public transportation, then that will significantly reduce polluting emissions overall, especially if the method of transportation like buses is cleaner overall. In today’s blog article, we are going to take a brief look at the federal and provincial greening solutions available today.

Provincial

BC Transit is the provincial organization that governs public transportation in British Columbia except for TransLink in Vancouver. BC Transit has several programs that aim to reduce greenhouse gases including the following:

Low-Carbon Fleet Program intended to reduce greenhouse emissions by 60% by 2040.

Federal and provincial funding to help achieve targets.

Fleet Electrification intended to replace existing buses with electric ones.

Initiatives to change over diesel-fueled buses to natural gas or other less polluting fuels.

Expanding both infrastructure throughout the province for walking and cycling and the areas served by public transportation.

Federal

The federal government also has several programs that impact buses:

The ZETF fund (Zero Emission Transit Fund) provides funds to transition buses from diesel fuel to electricity.

A $25 billion commitment over 10 years to help make public transportation cleaner.

A goal to arrive at net-zero emissions for public transportation by 2050 by supporting and encouraging other fuel options.

Keep in mind that all of these initiatives are for the purposes of public transportation and do not affect private individuals or businesses operating buses. At least not yet.
