How Advanced Technology Is Transforming School Bus Safety
School buses may look a lot like they did 50 years ago, but the truth is that new technology has significantly changed and improved school bus safety for children. In today’s blog article we want to take a look at what kinds of advanced technology is being used in school buses. However, be aware that what types of technology are used in buses can vary quite a bit from city to city or province to province.
Location
Probably the best-known new technology often seen in today’s school buses is GPS, which allows for easier navigation for drivers. However, in addition to GPS is advanced technology called AVLC or Automatic Vehicle Locator and Control. This technology uses GPS to be able to pinpoint where a bus is at all times and show its movement in real time. Both of these advances are commonly found in school buses and add significantly to safety.
Telematics
Telematics can be used to find “smarter” bus routes in real time. This kind of technology can help bus drivers be more efficient in driving, find faster routes, avoid delays and congestion, and even improve fuel mileage.
Cameras
Another major development in bus safety is the widespread use of cameras. Now, there are often cameras that are recording video of what is happening both inside and outside the bus. There is technology that will allow for still photos to be taken of license plates if a vehicle passes (illegally) a bus that is stopped to pick up or discharge passengers.
These are a just a few examples of new technology that makes school buses safer for our children. So, the next time you see a tired yellow school bus, keep in mind that it may be full of the latest technology to make it safe.
